Development and characterisation of a decellularised bovine osteochondral biomaterial for cartilage repair

It is proposed that an acellular natural osteochondral scaffold will provide a successful repair material for the early intervention treatment of cartilage lesions, to prevent or slow the progression of cartilage deterioration to osteoarthritis. Here, we investigated the efficacy of methods for the decellularisation of bovine osteochondral plugs. The plugs were subject to four freeze/thaw cycle...

Biomaterial osteoinduction

search between a Dutch group and a group in Chengdu, China,4,5 revealed that similar bone formation was seen with porous ceramics of various types of hydroxyapatite, tricalcium phosphate, and Bioglass® (NovaBone Products, Alachua, FL, USA). Fujibayashi and others in our department6 also reported that porous titanium processed with alkali-heat treatment has osteoinduction. This material contains...

A microfluidic biomaterial.

We report on the incorporation of microfluidic structure within a high-water-content hydrogel [4% (w/v) calcium alginate]. We used the microfluidic network to control the chemical environment within the hydrogel and demonstrated higher rates of delivery and extraction of solutes than was achievable by diffusion alone.

Albumin Affinity Biomaterial Surfaces

Recently, considerable progress has been made in designing biomaterial surfaces which possess enhanced albumin affinity. Two derivatization methods for producing albumin binding biomaterial surfaces, based on an albumin affinity dye, cibacron blue, have been developed. Both surface derivatization methods were found to enhance the binding of albumin to an implant grade polyetherurethane. Evaluat...

Biomaterial-based infrared detection.

This effort is focused on the use of crustacyanin protein extracted from the lobster shell in IR detection and imaging applications. In addition to the protein's excellent reversible thermo-active response in the IR region of interest, electrical characteristics versus temperature showed that the protein can be used as an electro-optic thermal sensing device as well. The high sensitivity and fa...
